RESOURCE: Gratitude - 30 days of journal prompts

Updated: Dec 29, 2023

Welcome to our journey of gratitude, a transformative practice that can significantly enhance your mental health and overall well-being. Regularly practicing gratitude is more than just a feel-good habit; it's a powerful tool that can reshape our perspective, leading to a happier and more fulfilled life.

Gratitude is not merely about being thankful; it's a deeper appreciation for everything around us, and it has been consistently linked to increased happiness. When we practice gratitude, we open ourselves to a world of positive emotions, allowing us to savour good experiences, improve our health, cope with adversity, and forge stronger relationships.

One effective way to nurture this habit is through daily journaling. Journaling about gratitude isn't just about recording good things; it's an invitation to embed positive experiences into the very fabric of our lives, thereby amplifying positivity throughout our day.

As we embark on this journey, we'll be using journal prompts. These aren't instructions, but rather catalysts for personal reflection. They are designed to evoke thoughts and feelings unique to you. When you encounter each prompt, take a moment to ponder what it means for you personally. Notice what arises within you as you read the prompt and be aware of where you feel it in your body. Embrace both the light and shadow within your emotions, acknowledging that negative feelings are an essential part of the process.

This is a no-judgement zone. There are no right or wrong responses. This is a space where you're free from judgement, both from others and yourself. Reflect on the prompt and write in whatever way feels right for you at this moment.

Let's begin our journey with the first week's focus on 'Self'. The prompts for this week are designed to foster self-appreciation and love:

1. I am grateful for me, exactly as I am right now.

2. I am unique and wonderful.

3. I am worthy.

4. I am loved.

5. I belong.

6. I deserve to experience pleasure and joy.

7. I am me.

In the second week, we turn our attention to our 'Village', the people who form our support system:

1. Who is in my Village.

2. I am grateful to each person in my village.

3. Thinking of one specific person - I am grateful for the joy they bring to my life.

4. Thinking of one specific person - I am grateful for the lessons and growth they bring to my life.

5. I am stronger because of my village.

6. My Village as a collective, has taught me...

7. My Village as a collective, allows me to...

For the third week, our focus expands to our 'Community', recognizing the broader environment we live in:

1. I am grateful to live in a community that...

2. I am grateful that I have enough...

3. I am grateful that the local government...

4. I am grateful that within my community I can...

5. Living in my community has taught me...

6. Because of where I live, I can...

7. Abundance is all around me.

In the fourth week, we connect with the 'Universe', acknowledging the grandeur of nature and our place within it:

1. Thank you Mother Nature.

2. The moon is my light and my darkness.

3. Emotions are like the tides.

4. I am the universe, the universe is me.

5. I am grateful for the twinkling of the stars, it's like...

6. Dear Universe,

7. Connected and connecting with my universe.

For longer months, bonus prompts to further enrich your practice:

1. I am beautiful, I am magical, I am free.

2. Today in 10 years, I will be...

3. I am grateful for my body.

Most importantly, we'll integrate this practice into a 'Gratitude Walk'.

This is a guided, moving meditation where you'll spend 30+ minutes walking in nature, acknowledging and expressing gratitude for everything around you, starting with yourself and expanding to your village, society, and the universe.

This blog post is just the beginning. By integrating even 5-10 minutes of gratitude journaling into your daily routine, you can significantly boost your positive outlook. So, let's start this gratifying journey together, embracing gratitude in all its forms.
