I’d love to chat with you today about the transformative power of focus and how you can harness it to shape your life.
In the journey of life, the power of focus stands as a beacon, guiding us towards our goals and dreams. It's a principle that resonates deeply with the idea that we manifest what we concentrate on. When we direct our attention towards our goals, we infuse them with energy and bring them closer to reality.
The Essence of Focus:
Focus is more than just a mental exercise; it's a way of life.
When you focus on your goals, you're not just thinking about them; you're bringing them into existence. The act of repeating your objectives throughout the day is like setting your internal GPS, ensuring that every decision you make is aligned with your ultimate destination.
But focus isn't just about setting goals, it’s not a passive ‘set and forget’ activity - focus is a conscious choice, it about being intentional about the actions you take to achieve them.
Every step, no matter how small, is a manifestation of your focus. These actions are the building blocks of your success, each one bringing you a step closer to your desired outcome. By maintaining focus, you're not only moving towards your goals, but you're also reinforcing a success-oriented mindset.
A Practical Technique: The Mirror Mantra:
One effective way to maintain focus is the 'Mirror Mantra.' This simple technique involves refining your ultimate goal into a short, clear sentence. Each time you see your reflection, repeat this mantra to yourself. This repetition acts as a constant reminder of your objectives, keeping you aligned and motivated. It's like a mini-coaching session that you give yourself multiple times a day, reinforcing your commitment to your goals.
Action Steps:
Define Your Goal: Take some time to clearly define what you want to achieve. Make it specific, measurable, and attainable.
Create Your Mirror Mantra: Condense your goal into a concise sentence that encapsulates your vision.
Practice Daily: Each time you see your reflection, repeat your mantra. This could be in the morning as you get ready, during a bathroom break, or in the evening as you wind down.
Take Small Actions: Identify one small action you can take today that will move you closer to your goal. It could be as simple as researching, making a phone call, or writing a plan.
I love this quote from Brendon Burchard, a high-performance coach:
"Generate more clarity by asking yourself every morning, 'What is it that I truly want today?'"
This practice of daily clarity aligns your focus with your daily actions.
The Essence of Focus:
"Where focus goes, energy flows," Tony Robbins, renowned life coach, once said. This simple yet profound statement encapsulates the essence of focus. It's about channeling your energy towards your goals, making them the centre of your attention. Choose to focus on what truly matters, and you'll be amazed at what you can achieve.
One of my favourite examples of how harnessing the power of focus allows us to achieve our biggest goals is a client from a recent year who wanted to run a marathon.
Sarah* is an accountant in her mid 50’s. A busy wife and mother of 3 adult kids. She had never been particularly athletic. However, she set a goal to run a marathon, inspired by a desire to challenge herself and improve her health.
Sarah started with short runs, gradually increasing her distance each week. Every week she faced a raft of challenges, including balancing training with her busy work schedule, participating in family life and overcoming a minor but niggling injury that regularly cut her runs short. However, her unwavering focus on her goal kept her motivated.
She used a training app to track her progress, joined a local running club for support and encouraged her family to run with her, even asked them to ride behind her on the long runs to provide hydration & nutrition support.
After months of focused training, Sarah successfully completed her first marathon. She not only achieved her goal but also developed a love for running and significantly improved her physical and mental well-being.
Beyond Sarah’s personal journey, one of the wonderful side effects of achieving our goals is the flow on effect we can have on the people around us. By focussing on our goals and pursing what truly matters to us, we become accidental role models for the people around us. Sarah pursued her running goal and in the process her children and partners joined her on Saturday morning for Parkrun, kick starting healthier lifestyles for the whole family.
