When we were kids, mum regularly packed us into the car and set off a road trip. One of my favourite activities on these trips was ‘read’ the map for mum (I’m sure I was very helpful). I would trace the route from our starting point all the way to the end.
How did I know that was where we were going? Because it always had the biggest circle around it.
Mum had a clear plan for our journey, she marked in the important stops along the way, but most importantly everyone in the car knew the destination and what it would take to reach it. Right down to the smallest member of the crew (me), we knew how long it would take, where we were stopping for lunch and which sights we could expect to see.
This is a long-winded way to say: Start with the end in mind
Before you begin your journey, your destination is the first step. It must be so clear that everyone around you knows exactly where you are going.
